Services for trades and small shops

Five services covering the books and tax returns most small businesses need. Each entry below sets out what the work involves and who it suits.

Handwritten figures in an old ledger, set out in neat columns between ruled lines

Bookkeeping

Suited to: tradespeople, sole traders and shops

Bookkeeping is the record of everything that comes into and goes out of the business. Kept properly, it is the base for every tax return, VAT return and set of accounts that follows.

Kestrel Accounts helps turn receipts, invoices and bank statements into clear, accurate records, so the numbers are there when they are needed.

Typically covers

  • Recording sales and purchase invoices
  • Matching transactions to bank statements
  • Organising receipts and expenses
  • Records ready for VAT and year end

Self assessment

Suited to: sole traders and business partners

If you are self-employed, you report your income to HMRC each year through a self assessment tax return. It brings together your business profit and any other income you have.

Kestrel Accounts prepares the return from your records, works out what is owed and files it with HMRC.

Typically covers

  • Working out taxable profit from your trade
  • Including other income, such as employment or property
  • Calculating Income Tax and National Insurance
  • Filing the return with HMRC

VAT returns

Suited to: VAT registered businesses

Once a business is VAT registered, it has to account for the VAT it charges and the VAT it pays, and submit returns to HMRC using Making Tax Digital software.

Kestrel Accounts prepares and submits VAT returns from your records, checking what can be reclaimed along the way.

Typically covers

  • Calculating VAT on sales and purchases
  • Checking which costs VAT can be reclaimed on
  • Submitting returns through Making Tax Digital
  • Keeping VAT records in line with HMRC rules

Management accounts

Suited to: owners who want a closer view of their figures

Year end accounts look back. Management accounts give you a view during the year, so you can see what is making money, where costs are going and how much cash is available.

Kestrel Accounts produces clear reports from your books that are useful for planning, pricing and day to day decisions.

Typically covers

  • Profit and loss for the period
  • A clear view of costs and margins
  • Cash position and what is owed
  • Figures to help with planning

CIS returns

Suited to: contractors and subcontractors in construction

Under the Construction Industry Scheme, contractors deduct money from subcontractors’ payments and pass it to HMRC, filing a return each month. Subcontractors need those deductions accounted for in their own tax.

Kestrel Accounts handles CIS returns for contractors and keeps deduction records straight for subcontractors.

Typically covers

  • Monthly CIS returns for contractors
  • Verifying subcontractors with HMRC
  • Payment and deduction statements
  • Accounting for deductions in a subcontractor’s tax return
